Josh Schuster founded Silverback Development to challenge the traditional approach to development in favor of projects that evoke an emotional response through intentional design and planning. Known for delivering high-profile developments, Josh has completed more than $650 million in real estate development, representing one million square feet of best-in class mixed use residential, retail, affordable and hospitality properties.
As a former principal and co-founder of DHA Capital, Josh sourced and led the development of noteworthy luxury residential condominium and rental properties, including 75 Kenmare, 50 Clinton, 535 West 43rd Street and 12 East 13th Street. Before DHA Capital, he launched Northpark Development, a full-service firm focused on residential mixed-use properties and Northpark Property Management, a property management company. Josh also partnered with JMH Development as executive director and was responsible for the groundbreaking luxury renovation of 184 Kent Avenue, one of the most successful rental conversions in Williamsburg — a transformation that earned Josh a Building Brooklyn Award.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Josh is committed to philanthropic work. He is the founder and chairman of the Bicol Clinic Foundation, a non-profit that constructs free medical clinics in developing countries and has raised more than $4 million and built four clinics on three continents.
Josh is the youngest member to sit on the board of the Baruch College Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute. He is also active with the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association, Urban Land Institute and the New York Private Equity Network. Josh also launched Skyraiser, a crowdfunding platform allowing users to see their interests in an open market. Josh was named one of The Real Deal’s Real Estate Rising Stars and Real Estate Forum’s Emerging Multifamily Leaders.
Jordan Tolman brings over a decade of experience in real estate and construction law and operations, having worked with numerous developers and operators of projects at all sizes. As a dealmaker, Jordan is known for creative solutions that deliver maximum value for all parties. He has multifaceted experience in all aspects of the construction contract process, adjoining owner access agreements, management of multifamily properties and rent regulation laws. Prior to joining Silverback Development, Jordan was a Partner at Levy Tolman LLP, where he represented multifamily and commercial property owners and developers. Jordan also served as Associate General Counsel at Stonehenge NYC.
Jordan received a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a Juris Doctor degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. His philanthropic efforts include his involvement with the UJA for many years, as well as a number of additional committees.
William Sully is Executive Managing Director of Acquisitions and Development at Silverback Development. Prior to Silverback, Bill was the Managing Director of US Acquisitions for Asia Pacific Land (“APL”), a $5 billion fund based in Asia, where he was responsible for sourcing, evaluating and negotiating equity and debt investments in the US. Before APL, Bill pursued development projects independently, which included closing a $155 million project in partnership with the Patrinely Group and USAA Real Estate Company. From 2005 through 2010, Bill served as a Managing Director at Cerberus Real Estate Capital Management. He also served as in-house developer for five major redevelopment projects within a multi-billion dollar portfolio. Prior to Cerberus, he was a partner at Apollo Real Estate Advisors, where he was responsible for sourcing and negotiating investment opportunities for a series of institutional equity funds sponsored by the firm.
Bill is a graduate of Dartmouth College and received a Master’s in Business Administration in real estate finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1988.
Burt Miller is a Senior Managing Director at Silverback Development where he focuses on new business development, acquisitions, capital markets and select project oversight. Miller spent the first half of his 30 years' in the Real Estate industry as a Tenant Rep office leasing broker in New York City. In 2004 he co-founded KMG Partners, a platform to execute Real Estate investments and developments. In the course of his career, as General Partner + Sponsor, Miller secured in excess of $550 million in equity and debt financing from some of the best capital providers in the world including equity partners such as: J.P. Morgan, Lehman Bros., Silverpeak Real Estate Partners, Canyon-Johnson Urban Funds, Marathon Asset Management, Urdang and many more. Miller’s past experience also includes the development of residential communities in Western North Dakota, assisting in the launch of a boutique capital markets group which was created by and with ABS Real Estate Partners which formed ABS Altman Warwick.
Miller graduated the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Business Management.
Jeff Neal was a development and acquisitions partner with Lincoln Property Company acting as Senior Vice President in the mid-Atlantic region. Jeff Neal spent the period of July 2010 through May 2011 with Lincoln heading the DC region’s acquisition efforts.
As one of two founding principals of Monument Realty LLC, from October 1998 until June 2008, Jeff Neal was responsible for overall management of the company’s operations with a focus on the acquisitions and financing components of its commercial and multi-family residential real estate development efforts. As one of the most active real estate companies in the region, Monument Realty completed over $3.0 billion of development including five million square feet of office space and more than 3,500 residential units in the Washington, DC metropolitan area during Neal’s time with the firm. Financial institutions such as Lehman Brothers, Apollo Real Estate Advisors (now AREA Property Partners), Prudential, Northwestern Mutual Life, The Carlyle Group, Bank of America, UBS, Corus Bank and others invested in multiple projects with Jeff Neal.
Jeff Neal previously served in executive positions at The John Akridge Companies and Carr Realty Corporation.
Jeff Neal holds a B.S. from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia.
Jay Jameson brings nearly 40 years of experience to his role as Executive Vice President at Silverback Development. Having established himself in the industry through his management skills across all functions of the development process, Jay has applied his wide-ranging knowledge to the development of large-scale commercial, institutional, hotel/hospitality and high-rise residential construction projects.
Prior to joining Silverback, Jay worked for many of the most prominent owner/developers in New York City including The Related Companies, Trump New World Development, Elad Group and JMH Development. He also has extensive international expertise having built a 6,000 unit mixed-use development in the State of Qatar for Qatari Diar/QPM Project Management. His portfolio also includes commercial projects for the Sony Corporation, Chase Manhattan Bank and the American Express Company.
Jay holds a BS in Architecture and Technology from the New York Institute of Technology and an MS in Construction Management from the Stevens Institute of Technology.
Cary Spiegel is Vice President of Construction at Silverback Development. Spiegel brings over forty years of construction management and owner’s representative experience in commercial, housing, retail, public, and institutional work. He has considerable experience leading multiple projects simultaneously with a strong background in marketing, management, design development, training, cost control and scheduling. He has additional skills in contract and lease negotiations and in expert witness testimony.
As a skilled architect, Spiegel brings a unique skill set to his work as a construction manager and owner’s representative. He has a full understanding of how to build a project while maintaining the integrity of the design. Prior to joining Silverback Development, Spiegel started Spiegel Consultants in 2001 and previously was an executive with HRH Construction in charge of design development for over a billion dollars of volume for projects. Spiegel has also served as chairman of the Plainsboro, NJ Zoning Board of Adjustment for more than 20 years, and chairman of the Board of Friends of Tranquility Camp, Inc., the fundraising arm of a non-profit children’s summer camp.
Spiegel is a graduate of the City College of New York School of Architecture and is a registered Architect in New York and New Jersey.
Alan Glick is Vice President of Development at Silverback Development. Glick brings almost ten years of institutional real estate experience. Previously at Equity Residential, an S&P 500 company, he was involved in acquisitions, development and asset management of the company’s multi-billion dollar East Coast portfolio. Glick’s prior experience includes Alvarez & Marsal, a leading international financial services firm recognized for turn-around and restructuring services, and Lehman Brothers, where he supported the restructuring and reorganization of the investment bank.
Glick holds a B.S. in Finance from George Washington University. He is board member at the GW Center for Real Estate and Urban Analysis and actively mentors students interested in real estate and supports GWU’s real estate programming.
Joseph Piraino brings over 11 years of experience to Silverback Development and oversees the construction of and execution of projects. Joe is committed to delivering high quality value and beauty to projects he manages. His expertise spans several aspects of real estate and investment banking, having collaborated on many large-scale projects both nationally and abroad. Joe has secured financing and capital allocations for the acquisition, development and restructuring of properties totaling over $2 billion. He has also been intimately involved in the acquisition and development of over 2,000,000 square feet of development projects globally.
Joe is a native New Yorker and graduate of St. John’s University where he earned a BS in Finance and BA in Political Science and Government. He currently co-chairs the St. John’s University CRE Alumni Association and attended New York University where he earned an MS in Real Estate Development.
Shannon Chang spearheads relationships with investors, family offices and large institutions, and communicates strategy, performance and a competitive edge. In addition to managing current and potential relationships, she oversees the evaluation and execution of new projects. Prior to joining, Shannon managed all aspects of development for a boutique firm. Her experience includes over six years of practicing at top-tier, international law firms such as Arnold & Porter and Clifford Chance LLP. She specialized in the Real Estate Group and represented lenders, borrowers, developers and funds. Her deals included the financing of the first gaming facility in NYC, the purchase of Forest City Ratner Companies’ retail portfolio and the refinancing of the Standard Hotel. Prior to Clifford Chance, Shannon served as a Special Assistant District Attorney in Kings County.
Shannon received her law degree from Fordham University School of Law and her B.A. in Spanish and Economics from Fordham University.
Ryan Cahill is an associate at Silverback Development and brings over ten years of experience in property management, development and investment. Ryan has expertise in sourcing new acquisition opportunities and the management of a large portfolio of multifamily units across three states. Prior to joining Silverback Development, Ryan’s worked for Asia Pacific Land, an international real estate investment, development and asset management firm where he was responsible for underwriting large scale development opportunities across major markets and asset classes nationwide. Prior to APL, he worked with a value-add private equity fund in New York City, supporting the acquisition and asset management team in underwriting and the management of retail, office and multifamily deals nationwide. Ryan began his career working for Horrigan Development LLC and was actively involved with the acquisition, planning and construction management of ground- up development and value-add projects in the Greater New York City Area.
Ryan received his M.S. Real Estate, Finance & Investment from New York University and a B.B.A. Finance from James Madison University.
Jenna Segal oversees all marketing initiatives at Silverback Development. Coupled with her passion for art and design, she advises on contracts, as well as many elements of construction and design at the firm. She brings a strong background in real estate law as a former associate at Levy Tolman LLP, where her practice spanned both transactions and litigation. Jenna’s clients included landlords and developers and her expertise includes administrative law in the HPD/DHCR due diligence review process.
Jenna earned her Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra Law, where she was the founding member of the Disaster Recovery Clinic at Hofstra. She earned her undergraduate degree from City University of New York, Hunter College.
Ryan Spiegel is an analyst at Silverback Development. Before joining Silverback, Ryan worked with a leading team at Jones Lang LaSalle, representing some of New York’s largest developers and commercial tenants. Spiegel has also spent time working at Related’s residential brokerage firm, CORE, in their Manhattan and Brooklyn offices.
Ryan graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in International Political Economics and Development.
Dylan Angarella is an Analyst with Silverback Development. He joins the firm with previous experience in private equity real estate having worked with the Energy and Real Estate divisions of GPB Capital Holdings. A Los Angeles native and graduate of Tulane University, Dylan holds a BSM in management with a minor in real estate. During his college career, Dylan competed for Tulane in their Division I Track & Field program, running the 200m and 400m.
Jesse Garrett is responsible for evaluating new acquisition opportunities and supporting the progression of the firm’s deep development pipeline. Prior to Silverback Development, Jesse worked with a national development firm and the private equity arm of a Fortune 100 company.
Jesse holds a B.A. in Financial Economics from Columbia College, Columbia University.
Lauren is Controller at Silverback Development. She brings more than 30 years of experience to her role where she oversees accounting for the firm’s real estate development, construction and management projects. Prior to joining the team, she held dual roles at The Clarett Group, LLC where she served as controller for the firm’s development, construction and management accounting in addition to handling all reporting requirements and the administration of insurance policies and legal documents. Lauren also ran a successful accounting and systems consulting firm of her own from 1992-1999 and spent 10 years as MIS director and controller at Park Tower Realty Corp.
